Cover songs

I’m a huge fan of cover songs. Even when they’re not that different than the original, I still like to see how people who aren’t the original artist deal with a well-known song. I like cross-genre cover songs even more (or any covers that are wildly different than the original). For instance, I’ve never thought much of Phish, in general, but I’m quite fond of their cover of Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice”. My most recent Metafilter post was a collection of Lady Gaga covers, even though only half of them were actually worth posting (no seriously, check out the Pomplamoose and Molly Lewis covers, they’re fantastic). Lately (by which I mean the last six months, maybe?), one of my favorite covers has been The Baseballs’ cover of Rihanna’s “Umbrella”. They cover it, and a variety of other stuff, in a rockabilly style, and do it well, and I think good rockabilly is some of the best stuff around. Check it out.

Also, I just discovered Rihanna is only 22 years old, and now I kind of feel like a failure at life. Get off my lawn.
